Countertop in the bathroom (50 photos): choose the material and design

Bathroom countertops are a completely new fashion trend, dictated by functionality and convenience. At the disposal of the owner, instead of a small washbasin, next to which there is a washing machine, is a full-fledged “rack” where you can store personal hygiene products. Today, such countertops are made in various designs: natural and artificial materials, interesting shapes, all kinds of shelves, types, niches and stands of original design.

Materials

The choice of countertops for the bathroom directly depends on the characteristics of the room - the overall style and size. Here, unlike the kitchen, there will be no hot pots or pans, so the requirements for durability and strength are slightly lower. Of course, it is better not to forget about the moisture resistance of the product.

Glass

Glass countertops for the bathroom are a very popular option. The features of this material are that it is unrealistic to fit the washing machine and the configuration, as well as the dimensions of the sink. The latter is included (mortise sink) with countertop. The design of such a product looks attractive and original.

Advantages:

  • glass countertops are scratch resistant, it is almost impossible to break (thanks to the use of modern technologies in the manufacture);
  • these products are easy to care for.

Minuses:

  • after washing, it is necessary to wipe the glass of the countertop dry, otherwise ugly stains from the water will remain;
  • Such a pedestal "fits" far from every interior.

Granite

Granite countertops can yield only quartz in quality. This is a natural material with an original pattern and various colors: from blurry to bright. In addition, the granite countertop is easy to operate, impervious to moisture and scratch resistant. Among the disadvantages, the following deserve special attention:

  • high price;
  • heavy weight;
  • risk of deformation during illiterate installation (incorrectly set height, unsuitable fastenings, etc.).

Quartz

Quartz is a durable material of natural origin. A certain percentage of quartz, by the way, is present in any natural stone. In order to expand the color palette of quartz, tabletop manufacturers use special dyes, resins, pigments, etc.

A quartz bathroom countertop is stronger than granite, does not require filling and is not “afraid” of moisture, stains, and bacteria. But the price of such products is very high. Due to texture processing and grinding, ugly finger stains often remain on them during use, therefore, care for the countertop should be regular and thorough.

Marble

Marble countertops look elegant and luxurious. Today, this material has become more accessible than a couple of years ago. Most often, marble is white with gray spots. Although you can find more interesting marble colors.

The advantages of such bathroom countertops are obvious:

  • strength and durability;
  • perfect combination with any style of bathroom;
  • marble can be ground and subjected to other types of processing.

Disadvantages:

  • high price;
  • tendency to crack, stain and other deformations;
  • low resistance to acid.

Acrylic

This material is no less in demand today than countertops made of artificial stone, marble and granite. Such products from special plastic have a wide color gamut, but the pattern on their surface is practically invisible. Acrylic plastic bathroom countertops are in perfect harmony with various interiors, are resistant to bacteria, water and stains. In addition, it is worth highlighting:

  • solidity;
  • compatibility with other decor items, regardless of lighting and color;
  • the ability to mask minor damage to the plastic by grinding.

Note: today there is also an acrylic bathroom top with a built-in apron and sink.

Concrete

It would seem that concrete is a building material. But, nevertheless, it is often used in interior design (concrete easily repeats a given shape, and its height can be any). Concrete cast worktops are:

  • organic material that can mimic natural stone;
  • wide selection of textures and colors, original design;
  • durability and environmental safety.

But, despite all the advantages, concrete has a number of disadvantages:

  • noticeable seam lines requiring masking with color filler;
  • the need for regular grinding and waxing;
  • mortise sink provides for independent installation.

Laminate

Laminate appeared in the early 70s of the last century. But today this material has become more perfect and attractive: a wide range of textures, a design that imitates graphite, wood and even stone. It is produced as follows: thin plastic layers under pressure are glued to plywood or MDF.

Laminate bathroom countertops are durable, easy to care for and resistant to moisture thanks to a special coating. They have a low cost, and most importantly - do not require professional installation.

However, over time, this pendant bathroom furniture dims and is "depleted." Damage cannot be repaired - the entire surface of the countertop will have to be completely replaced.

Tree

Wooden bathroom tops are a great alternative to MDF products. Natural wood has a much higher resistance to various kinds of damage, humidity and a longer service life. Even if the protective layer of this material is damaged, rapid swelling and decay will not occur. Of course, the cost of wooden countertops is fundamentally different from the same laminate - up.

Mosaic

A mosaic worktop is an excellent choice for those who prefer to do everything with their own hands. This material, which is usually made of glass or ceramic, is durable and reliable. And with rich imagination, you can even make a real masterpiece - a plasterboard worktop in the bathroom, decorated with mosaics of an unusual shape and original design. The cost of such an experiment will be minimal.

The only “weak point” of such countertops is that the mosaic has a not very high bottom of the base and seams (usually made of drywall). But do not be afraid of the low moisture resistance of gypsum - this can be corrected with the help of special protective agents by simply treating them with the suspended surfaces of the countertop.

Tile

Ceramic tile is a simple but very beautiful finishing material that is widely used by designers for interior decoration. The stone countertop with the presence of decorative tiles looks original and sophisticated.

Advantages:

  • glazed tiles are resistant to scratches, moisture, stains and high temperatures;
  • affordable price;
  • in case of deformation, tile sections can be replaced;
  • custom-made and self-installation possible - more accurate width and desired design.

The only drawback of the tile is that mold and dirt often accumulate in the joints, which is difficult to get rid of.

So, with the materials for the manufacture of bathroom countertops, everything is clear. But there are also selection features related to the functionality, design and configuration of these products.

A variety of design solutions and forms

The convenience of the countertop is determined not by its appearance, but by the shape and quality of the base on which it is installed. This is where the functionality lies. There are floor and wall models (large and small version). The difference between them is only in the installation method. Although some furniture provides easier care for the floor in the bathroom (wall-mounted product).

Now consider in more detail each of the above options.

  1. Floor worktop - simple and comfortable furniture. All that is needed in this case is to install it in place and adjust the level using the legs. Then connect the sink and the washing machine to the sewage system and water supply. Such a cabinet is spacious: under the countertop, you can place a large number of hygiene products needed in the bathroom. In addition, there are models with additional drawers and shelves for storing linen.
  2. Not much inferior to its floor "brother" and the wall mortise tabletop. The difference lies only in its spaciousness and installation - the furniture is attached to the wall using anchors. And, of course, the height of such a countertop is considered more convenient.
  3. Decorative bathroom countertops also may not have a large cupboard or cabinet underneath. These are individual types of products that are produced in several variations: wall and floor. The first, for example, have long legs. As for floor models, their installation involves the use of special brackets. Also, countertops of this plan, or rather a sink for them, should have chrome-plated siphons. Their cost, by the way, is several times higher than that of plastic counterparts.

Choose a countertop for the bathroom is not difficult. The main thing is to determine its material, appearance and dimensions. And it’s better to order furniture on an individual project. Then it is guaranteed to fit into the overall interior of the bathroom.
